2/26 - So with the glorious start of Spring training 10 spot time, there has been the annual and expected gushing of words, mostly signifying nothing. And that is just fine. We dig this time of year. Youk is all aggro, the lil’ Gangsta defiant, Papalopagus pimp talkative, Theo brow scrunching serious and bland.
Nice.
We dig this time of year. Soon enough the injuries and slumps will kick in and we will whine and fret over every misplaced fastball, misplayed liner, mistaken swing, miscue on the paths.
For now, the only irritation, really, is the awful, awful, AWFUL use of punned headlines from Globe and Herald writers. Lowell is doing a “limbo” dance, Drew is ready to “shoulder” the load, Cameron is “centered.” Each day brings a fresh sprinkle of smelly atop the verdant green of Sox goings on. We can take the stink with the joy for sure, because baseball is back, and we here at the Original Red Sox Podcast have a spring in our step!
Oh, and by the by. This is our sixth season in the land of the pod. Howzaboutthemapples!?!?
Go Sox!

5/11 -
We did not discuss Manny on our ‘cast today because there is so much good/interesting/relevant stuff going on in the world of the Red Sox. Manny was such a distraction, at times, while on the team, that it does not seem fair to the Live 25 that he take time away from discussing them now that he is gone.
Separate from the cast, however, We wanted to point out a few key bits gleaned from the coverage over the past few days.
1) In order for Manny to be suspended, he had to fail TWO tests. The first was in Spring training. Only one written report we’ve come across thus far has made this important point. We have not read or heard whether Manny knew he failed the first test.
2) Manny may have passed 15 tests he submitted to DURING the last five seasons. BUT… as far as we could find, MLB does NOT test off season and Manny was caught using a drug that players do AFTER running a cycle of ‘roids. None of the coverage we’ve seen ties these various details together.
3) Add the above to Manny’s anxiety about not getting signed (Remember that phone call relayed by another player in which he supposedly said no one wanted him?) and wanting BIG money (It has been reported he boasted at different times about $100 million and $150 million contracts during last season and hired Mr. Gouge himself, Scott Boras).
4) This mix of anxiety and the gimmies gimmies thrust upon a dude who has never seemed to have a strong sense of personal morality or dignity (See his rapping on YouTube, peeing in the Monsta, shoving old people, not giving to charity, etc.), could have led to doing a quickie cycle of ‘roids over the Winter.
5) The stuff Manny took, Jose Canseco got caught with at the Mexican border last year. We’ve only found one report that brought that up, but it’s easy to verify. Google “Canseco HCG”.
6) No middle-age dude can escape the ED drug advertising blitz. Not even Manny. How likely is it that a guy took a weird med with an acronym very close to Human Growth Hormone (HGH vs HCG) that isn’t even meant for men, instead of a little blue pill?
This being stated, we liked Manny as a Red Sox up until the Middle of last year. We liked him as a Dodger from the moment he arrived. We live in L.A. and went to a game during that first week he was here. It was a lot of fun. We want the Blue Sox to go back to being The Dodgers, one baseball’s best teams.
And we can forgive almost anyone, almost anything, IF they truly come all-the-way clean. A-Rod didn’t, Roger didn’t, Andy Pettite did. As a result, we have endless respect for the lefty and contempt for the other two. If Manny did what we think he did, he should own up big time. Tell everything. Show the receipts. Give the names of the folks who helped him do it. Walk the world through the entire process. Then come back and really work to rebuild his image.
Think about it. In South Africa and Rwanda, people were forgiven for killing people, sometimes ALOT of people. If they can come clean, Manny can. And if Manny does, we’ll forgive him. And maybe Hall of Fame voters and the big money contract signing GMs will, too.
